Visual Influences (Burning Paradise)

The film should use colours in a subtle way to create mood. For example, in the shots below.

I have seen this a lot in Asian crime films of the 80s and 90s especially. They have a neo-noir influence and are visually interesting.

Blues and white for Jay and Lily.

Reds and blacks for Tai and Soon.

These films also tend to show characters isolated in the frame or positioned at an angle. This makes them appear isolated or disturbed. Or, with distance between them in the frame to show that they can't be together.

Also, static wider shots contrast with intrusive, closer hand-held shots. Gives a sense of sudden energy.

The characters in the films often have a sense of desperation or sadness. The title, Burning Paradise, is a bit like 'broken dreams'. Perfect happiness doesn't exist.

Characters veer between introspection and rage. Very slow, quiet scenes contrast with fast violent scenes. Characters never seem to be in control.
